The Story

In its efforts to bring an end to the so-called school-to-prison-pipeline, the de Blasio administration has emphasized “restorative justice,” where consequences are waived in favor of counseling and student-directed discussion. Yet violent incidents and weapons seizures have increased in city schools over the last year. Now suspensions are going up, too, suggesting that teachers and principals are re-asserting control over their classrooms despite Department of Education pressure. All students deserve safe and quiet classrooms in which to learn; those who misbehave or disrupt are deservedly suspended.
